Google AdWords – How To Write Great Ads

Mike Seddon asked:

What is it that makes an ad a great ad that attracts a lot of clicks?

Many Google AdWords users will spend a lot of time, energy and money trying to get their ads to the top position as they believe this will increase their click through rate. Generally they are right. The more prominent your ad the more likely it will get looked at.

However it is not unusual for ads with lower positions to get more clicks than the ad in the top position. The secret for this is all in the words used in the ad itself.

Writing a clickable ad is not an exact science but there are some tips and techniques that can really help improve the clicks you ads are getting. They will also save you money as you shouldn’t need to chase the top position to get a good click through rate.

1) Get your keyword in the title.

The first line of your ad (the title) is the one that people scan first. It’s almost subconscious because they take in the whole page almost at once. So if they see their keywords in the title of you ad their subconscious mind makes a positive connection with your ad.

2) State the benefits in your second line.

Now that your first line has made a positive connection, you need to reinforce that by stating the benefit they will get if they click on your ad. If your benefit matches their need then you are almost home and dry. A click is almost certainly going to happen now!

3) Include a Call to Action.

Make your third line the call to action and also introduce a sense of urgency so that they will take immediate action. A good example of a third line is something like. Act Now. Offer ends Today.

4) Never forget the purpose of the ad

The purpose of an ad is to get a click. It is NOT to sell your product. Your website should do that once you have got them to click on the ad. It’s amazing how easy it is to start writing a sales pitch for your product in the ad rather than concentrate on the benefits of clicking on the ad.

For example: If you were selling a new back pain relief drug then you might start to write about how good the drug was, how cheap etc. So you may write an ad something like this. Back Ache? Try our new drug. Cheapest Drug Available. Whilst this might sound okay, it’s too product focused. You prospective clicker is looking for benefits. A better ad would be. Back Ache. Wave GoodBye To Back Ache. Relief Guaranteed.

5) Keep it Relevant

This actually isn’t about getting more clicks. It is actually about making sure that the clicks you are getting are worth getting. You need to make sure that your ad will attract people that will want what you have to offer. Read you ad and ask yourself this question. If I clicked on my ad what would I expect to see on the website I am taken to. If it isn’t what your website is offering then you need to rethink the ad.

If you find you are getting a lot of clicks but very few conversions then it is very likely that you ads are setting a false expectation of what you website is offering.

Make More Money Through Your Pay Per Click Advertising If You Focus On The Little Things Too

P Lee asked:

Pay per click advertising has become more difficult than it has been in the past, but you can approach it in two ways. One way is for you to give it up completely and miss out a golden opportunity. The other way is to master it well to your advantage while everyone else is still complaining about it being so difficult.

PPC Advertising and Internet Marketing

I see pay per click advertising and internet marketing will get even more popular as time goes by. After all, where on earth can you find the capability to offer your business products to hundreds of million prospective customers within 15 minutes at a little cost? Well ‘a little cost’ may be a bit exaggerated, but then again which other business offers you free advertising to a really targeted market?

Getting A Huge Keyword Listing

Having a massive number of keywords is a pre-requisite to your success in PPC advertising. Having said that, don’t feel elated and fabulous about this and do nothing. Remember it is better to have a few great super performing keywords than a big list of keywords that do nothing for you.

What you can and should be doing with this huge keyword list is to monitor and find out which ones are getting impressions and generating a good click-through-rate history for your campaign. Then trim your list by getting rid of useless keywords not benefiting you. This eventually improves your overall quality score determined by Google, which is essential for good advertising campaign management and ultimately how profitable your business becomes.

Make Your Title Captivating

Don’t believe what you read about completing your advertising campaign in Google Adwords within five minutes. Theoretically, this may be done, but then, what is the benefit of rushing to complete it in such a record time. You should spend whatever time required to make it good. The title or headline you choose, is extremely important and should attract and convince the web surfer to want to read your full text which will then lead them to your landing page. Remember that there are other advertisers just like you promoting similar products or services. Your title has to be more unique and captivating than what they have to offer. A smart approach would be to do a random search in Google to see how they are advertising so you can outsmart them.

Some Proven Techniques To be Considered.

a. Start your ads with words like “How to”, or “Here’s ….”

b. Ask a question in your title like “Want To Make $100,000 Per Month?”

c. Do a jerk like “ Don’t Join Our Program” d. Have a keyword in your title so that Google bolds this word

Indicating Price Tag

There is no golden rule whether to put the price of your product or service in your advertisement text. However, what is more important is knowing what circumstances require your actions for inclusion or exclusion. If you are selling LCD monitor for $200 and your competitor is selling the same product for $170, do not include the price in your advertisement.

If you find a high click-through-rates without much sales conversions it may be an indication of untargeted traffic. It would be wise to change your text to include the product price. You can also remove words in text which influence people to click freely. Words include try, download, free and sale among others.

Monitor and Change

Often, people have the wrong impression that you can create an adword campaign and check on it once or twice to see if an adgroup (you should have a few in a campaign) is profitable. If it is, leave it to continue making money. If not just delete it. Unfortunately this may not be the best approach and may not only hurt your advertising campaigns, it may result in you loosing faith in pay per click advertising – for the wrong reasons.

You definitely need to monitor all your pay per click campaigns closely daily even if they are already profitable and be ready to adjust your settings accordingly. In this way, you can be sure that your profitable keywords are always displaying on the first results page of the search engine. This would ensure you have a high conversion rate which puts your make money through pay per click advertising efforts on track to a successful internet marketing business.

Increase Your Click-Through Rate And Skyrocket Your Sales – 3 Quick Tips

Kathryn ONeill asked:

Most pay per click ads draw amazingly low click through rates (the number of people that click on your ad divided by the number of people that see your ad).

This not only hurts sales in the form of less clicks to your site, but on search engines like Google, it can even drop your ranking like a stone.

How can you improve your click-through rate?

Here are 3 tips to improve your click through rate and pre-sell your audience so that your web sales go through the roof.

#1 Include the highest searched term (the most popular term) in your title and/or description.

For example, if you’re bidding on a cluster of keywords surrounding the theme ‘Cheap Web hosting’, try to include the term ‘cheap web hosting’ in both your title AND your description. This will dramatically increase your click-through ratio (and thereby also increase sales).

While this is a fairly well known fact, many ppc marketers don’t do it. But think about it from your searchers’ point of view. There is an OVERLOAD of information out there. People are extremely uncomfortable with information overload. It sets up a form of cognitive dissonance or ‘searcher discomfort’.

Searchers remove this discomfort by finding a website that matches what they’re searching for. When they see that your title and description has matched their search term, they think, ‘This website has exactly what I’m looking for’ and they eagerly click on your ad.

#2 Use emotionally charged words.

While many website builders are brilliant at creating websites – let’s face it, they’re not so hot at selling.

Selling is an emotional, creative process. People buy with their emotions and then justify it with reason. If you want to sell to them, you have to access their emotions (access your right-brain and use your feelings to empathize with their desires).

Building a website and promoting an online business is a very organizational, logical process. It requires mostly left-brained abilities. So you can see how some people can build a beautiful website – but find it nearly impossible to sell from that website

Here’s where you can leave your competition in the dust and rake in the sales: Use emotionally charged words and phrases in your ad copy and people will be falling all over themselves to click on your ad to see what you have to offer.

For example, instead of ‘Sweet’ why not say ‘Mouth-watering’ or ‘Sumptuous’. Instead of ‘How to start your own Internet business’ how about ‘Travel the world while running your business from the luxury of your hotel suite.’

The options are endless and if you look at most ppc ads – you’ll easily see areas where you can tower over your competition and make your ad stand out – even if they bid higher than you.

#3 Include a sense of urgency.

Again – this is one feature that is completely ignored by most pay per click marketers.

With competition heating up every day, you need to give people a REASON to click, a little push, a feeling that they’re going to miss out on something BIG if they don’t click on your ad RIGHT NOW.

There are lots of ways you can do this. If you’re advertising something that’s on sale why not say, ‘Sale ends soon’. Or how about ‘Only while supplies last’. People absolutely **** to lose out so when you add urgency to your ad, you’ll be skyrocketing your click-through rate and putting people in a rush to buy.

While these 3 tips will dramatically increase your click through rate, here’s one last tip: make sure you deliver exactly what your ad promised when the user clicks through to your website. You’ve put them in the frame of mind to at least see what you offer – and now it’s time to deliver.

By giving them exactly what they expect to see, you’ll not only earn their trust and approval, you’ll also send your web sales through the roof!
