The Compelling Reasons For Advertising on the Internet

Steve Evans asked:

Internet advertising is undoubtedly a boon for many businesses, especially small and high specialized operations. Due to its many advantages, corporate houses are using online advertising as one their favorite business internet services.

Internet advertising is now the third largest media spend behind TV and Newspapers. Australian advertisers spent a touch over $13 billion Aus in the mainstream media in 2007, with the internet again emerging as the standout performer in a year that delivered strong growth.

Internet advertising is hot today, not just at a global level, but in all countries with a big uptake of broadband internet. One example is India, where the new middle class are taking to the internet in droves. There are now about 26 mn internet users in India, largely in the age group of 20 to 40, which has naturally now become the target-base for India’s rapid growth advertising industry.

However, in some countries with high web take up online growth is slowing because it’s starting to feel the edges of the potential market. Despite this offline media spending is collapsing, often supported only by inertia and the fact that both large and small businesses are a little afraid of making the transition to online advertising.

In addition, various sectors of the media industry are facing a rapidly changing market scene. Another concern with internet advertising for the mainstream business is that online advertisements and paid announcements are commonly not labeled as such, and conflicts of interest are commonly not disclosed. However, it is critical, for consumers to be able to make informed choices. It is also in the long term essential that they be able to distinguish between neutral information and advertising, sponsored content, or paid-for hyperlinks, or in the end the public will simply distrust and hence ignore anything they see, as a possible advert.

Online advertising becomes essential as soon as any business sets up its own website. Having a website for a particular business is worthless until and unless people know about your business and put their trust and likings on services that you provide.

Online advertising breaks roughly into two camps. The fastest-growing side has been search-engine advertising, led by Google and Yahoo. Online banner advertising is every bit as measurable and targettable as Search ads. The click through rate is definitely lower, but for the right type of advertiser – focused on brand building rather than customer acquisition – they are definitely still valuable.

Add into the equation, internet marketing and the mix of gold rush fever and seemingly unlimited audience has led to a frenzy of businesses and individuals clambering to build websites and live the online dream.

Ads can be placed anywhere on a page, although ads are more successful when they are displayed near the top of the page. If the viewer has to scroll down to see your ad it will be less effective. Additionally, buyers can now streamline their searches to fit specific requirements, which helps them pinpoint their needs faster.

Advertisers and Web publishers must, however, not ever fail to understand that content is king. They should understand that users do not want to be exposed to products and offers, unless in the right context and with relevancy to their current interests.

Considering the age we live in, there’s virtually nothing more crucial than advertising on the Internet. Especially if you have an online business, website or blog. The reason I give extra emphasis to cyberspace is related to the fact that you can advertise online so much cheaper than you can advertise on television or even the radio.
